What is the purpose of a Refractory panel?

Fireplace back panels reflect heat, generated from the fire, back into the room. Most factory built and 0 clearance fireplace manufacturers require replacement of refractory panels when a dime can be inserted into the crack or when the surface of the refractory panel has deteriorated more than ¼” from the original surface. Fireside Chimney Supply offers DIY cut to fit replacement refractory panels in 5 different sizes and brick patterns.

Replacement Refractory Panel Curing Process

Important:

This process must be followed or you risk the chance of cracking your replacement fireplace refractory panels.

1) Once your replacement fireplace refractory panels are received, store for 24 hours at room temperature.

2) Fireplace brick panels can be cut to fit and installed at this point.  Allow an additional 24 hours with no fires

3) Light six small curing fires allowing the fireplace brick panels to cool after each fire.  A curing fire consists of lighting a small bundle of kindling or cutting a Dura-Flame log into six pieces for the six fires. Burn each fire for 1/2 an hour.

The small curing fires are required in order to dry the moisture in the replacement fireplace refractory panels. You do not want to heat the moisture. Once this is accomplished you can have normal fires.

NOTE:
Due to the nature and fragility of freshly made refractory panels a representative must be present to accept delivery and inspect for damage. A signature will be required. Any additional freight charges due to missed appointments will be at the expense of the homeowner. If damage occurs in shipment the package must be refused and returned to Fireside Chimney Supply before the driver leaves. Fireside Chimney Supply will not be responsible for damage to the product once shipment has been delivered.

Back Panel Removal

When removing the fireplace back panel you must go slow and easy due to old panels breaking easily. Remove the side without the gas line by unscrewing the retaining clip located at the top front of the refractory panel
Take the panel out of the firebox
Measure the size of the old panel length & height. Mark your size  to fit the new panel and cut using a masonry blade
Install the new refractory panel using the retaining clips
Reinstall old side panel with retaining clip
A small fire must be maintained for the first few hours to allow the panels to cure

Side Panel Removal

Remove the retaining clip of the panel you want to replace
Measure the size of the old panel length & height. Mark your size  to fit the new panel and cut using a masonry blade (Diamond blades available below)
Install the new refractory panel using the retaining clips
A small fire must be maintained for the first few hours to allow the panels to cure

Bottom Panel Removal

Remove all panels from the firebox beginning with the side refractory panels and ending with the bottom panel
Measure the size of the old panel . Mark your size  to fit the new panel with the smooth edge toward the front of the firebox and cut using a masonry blade (Diamond blades available below)
Install the new refractory panel with smooth edge toward the front of the firebox
Reinstall the back and side refractory panels using the retaining clip.
A small fire must be maintained for the first few hours to allow the panels to cure

Quality product... excellent customer service!
Bill and Mike, I can't thank you enough for your efforts in getting me the refractory panels I need for my wood-burning fireplace insert. The ordering process with Bill was very informed and led to getting the correct product the first time. This is especially important as these refractory panels are in excess of 70 pounds each and not easily returned if they are wrong. So far they are working well.

As important is the excellent customer service that was provided when one of the panels broke while I was working with it and then its replacement arrived damaged in shipping. Bill and Mike worked with me to get that all resolved in as timely a fashion as one could have hoped when dealing with items that are too heavy for the UPS/FedEx routine. I am very cognizant of customer service and Fireside performed right up to my fairly high bar throughout this transaction. I would definitely turn to them again if I needed other products available from Fireside.

Good product
It is hard to find a hearth panel this large. Thank you for the great customer service by Mike there. He made sure that I hit the panel in a timely manor. I would recommend them to any potential customer.

Replacement fire brick
Fast, courteous service, cut my brick to size and sent it right out, received in 4 days. The brick is far better quality than a previous replacement, thicker depth.
